Community Mothers from throughout the Longford, Athlone and Mullingar areas gathered recently to exchange stories of their experiences.
The event, which took place at the Harmony House Community Centre in Longford, included many exchanges which emphasized the contribution Community Mothers make in reducing the isolation and stress many parents of young children experience. The meetings also highlighted the gratitude of families who avail of the service and the mutual benefits that both Community Mothers and parents gain from it.
The scheme provides home visits for parents with children under five years-old. There are many reasons why families access the service, such as having no relatives or friends living close by, new parents struggling to adjust to their new role in life, and parents who are new to the local area and are unsure of what suitable activites are available for their children. Experienced mothers offer support and friendship to parents using the service.
Funded by the HSE, the network includes mothers originally from towns throughout the Midlands as well as countries such as Poland, Nigeria and Bulgaria.
