The successful candidates: Martin Monaghan, Peggy Nolan, Gerry Hagan, Seamus Butler, Kevin Hussey, Niall Gannon and Uruemu Adejinmi
Voter turnout in the Longford municipal district was less than half at 49.99%.
6,920 of the 13,843 people on the electoral register came out last Friday and used their vote.
Of the first preference vote, Fine Gael secured 36.17% (2,469 votes), Fianna Fáil 43.46% (2,966), Independents 10.3% (703), Sinn Féin 5.87% (401), The Irish People 1.8% (123), Green 92 (1.34%) and People Before Profit 71 (1.04%).
The seven candidates elected were Count 1 - Gerry Hagan (FG) 1,071, Martin Monaghan (FF) 1,051, Seamus Butler (FF) 1,041 and Peggy Nolan (FG) 890 who all exceeded the 854 quota. They were joined on the fourteenth and final count by Niall Gannon (FG), Uruemu Adejinmi (FF) and Kevin Hussey (FF) without reaching the quota.
Six new faces and three recounts as Longford local elections produce plenty of drama
Among the four FF and three FG representatives elected, there are two new faces in Niall Gannon (FG) and Kevin Hussey (FF) while the five other successful candidates are outgoing councillors. John Browne (FG) didn’t seek re-election, while Independent Gerry Warnock also didn’t seek re-election as he indicated he intends to run in the general election.
