Longford Local Elections 2024: Acutely aware of the needs of rural dwellers

Ballymahon Municipal District Meet the Candidate: Martin Skelly, Fine Gael

Newtowncashel man and first-time Fine Gael local election candidate Martin Skelly is a dedicated family man with a strong commitment to community development and volunteering.

He has a proven track record of leadership and advocacy for job creation and skills revitalisation in South Longford.

Through his involvement in local organisations and charity events, such as the hugely successful Longford GAA race day and the Longford Rose of Tralee, he has raised significant funds for local charities and Longford GAA.

He is chairperson of the GAA Race Day committee.

Additionally, he previously served as Chairperson of the Leinster Council and Longford GAA County Board, demonstrating his passion for promoting sports and community facilities.

Martin’s focus on improving infrastructure, such as roads and internet access, shows his commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all residents in the Ballymahon district.

With a background in farming and finance, Martin is also acutely aware of the needs of people living in rural communities.
He is currently Secretary of the Saint's Island graveyard committee.

Martin’s family is not new to politics as his grandfather, Tom O’Shea, was a local County Councillor for the Ballymahon district from 1932 to 1945.
