Ballymahon Municipal District Meet the Candidate: John Rooney, Sinn Féin
The Sinn Féin candidate in Ballymahon Municipal District is Edgeworthstown man John Rooney. Describing himself as a father and husband, John has been self-employed in the construction industry for over thirty years.
Before that, John graduated with a Business Studies Accountancy Degree from Athlone where he was also the Chairperson of the Students Union.
He believes that ‘a strong community should be at the heart of our priorities’.
He added, “I have volunteered my time in the school’s board of management, coaching at Mostrim United and I am also passionate about the performing arts and I am an active member of the Mostrim Players.”
John’s opinion is ‘that our community has been poorly served by the current council members’ and if elected, he will do his very best ‘to make sure you and your family are listened to’.
John’s campaign priorities include the development of community theatre space and increasing the supply of social and affordable housing.
A sports enthusiast, John is of the view that there should be more support for local amenities and sports clubs; along with increased supports for post primary and further education.
Road safety, traffic calming and enforcement; along with improving streetscapes and tackling commercial occupancy levels and dereliction are also issues that are high on John’s agenda.
