Ballymahon Municipal District Meet the Candidate: Mark Casey, Independent
Now seeking a fourth successive term, Lanesboro’s Mark Casey is a well established Independent councillor.
A former County Council Cathaoirleach, he is a strong advocate for his area. Late last year, he stated that he would hold Longford County Council responsible for injuries caused to any child on the road if a lollipop person is not reinstated in Lanesboro.
“Going back to when I went to National School, there has always been a lollipop lady in Lanesboro,” he stated at a meeting of Ballymahon Municipal District.
“It’s a very busy junction. Cars build up speed coming down the hill and then you have the N63, probably one of the busiest roads in Longford.”
Earlier this year, he described the mooted measures which could see the reduction of mooring times from five to three days, the displacement of winter mooring and imposition of a tax on all business operating on the Shannon as “absolutely ridiculous”.
He also hit out at those responsible for a 2024 fire at a local building that was under consideration to house Ukrainian refugee families.
"The fire put people in jeopardy. There are people who live beside that building, there are businesses beside that building, it is an absolute disgrace what is going on. I’d be very surprised if it was anyone local who had anything to do with this. It is not the mindset of the people of Lanesboro.”
