Thirty-nine candidates in the race to fill eighteen Longford County Council seats

Local Elections 2024 takes place on Friday, June 7 when 18 members will be selected to represent the three Local Electoral Areas that make up Longford County Council.

The three Municipal Districts within Longford County Council are: Longford (seven seats), Ballymahon (six seats), and Granard (five seats).

Every Irish citizen and every person ordinarily resident in the State who has reached the age of 18, and not subject to disqualifications, is eligible for election.

All candidates submitted a completed nomination form to the Returning Officer during the nomination acceptance period between May 11 and 12 noon on Saturday, May 18,  2024.

Candidates pay an initial deposit of €100 and submit an additional deposit of €100 to the Returning Officer.

Of the 18 sitting councillors three have indicated they will not seek re-election.

In Longford Town Cllr Gerry Warnock (Ind) and Cllr John Browne (FG) will be absent from the ballot paper, while in Granard Cllr PJ Reilly is not contesting the election.

On Monday information posted on the door of Longford County Council by Mary Gouldsbury, Ceann Comhairimh/Returning Officer, indicates that 39 candidates will seek election in the three Local Electoral Areas.

The seven Longford seats will be contested by 18 candidates, 12 will run for Ballymahon's six seats, while in Granard voters have nine options to fill the five seats.

The ballot paper will feature 10 women, two in Granard, two in Ballymahon and six in the Longford LEA.

Independents make up the largest block, with 13 non party candidates in the race, Fine Gael have 10 runners, Fianna Fáil also have 10, there are three Sinn Fein members seeking election and one from the Irish Peoples Party, People Before Profit and the Green Party.
