A visit by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin painted a bright future for Longford with economic expansion the driver for forthcoming growth.

The primary reason for the visit was the announcement by Technimark of the intention to create 80 new high skill jobs, as they double the size of the medical manufacturing facility in Longford.

In the white expanse of the purpose built 50,000-square-foot extension An Taoiseach said: “I think this growth represents the potential of Longford into the future.”

It was a day for good news. After a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at St Christopher's Special School the Fianna Fáil leader dropped the curtain on a plaque marking the opening of a €4 million sustainable social housing scheme at St Michael’s Court.

The housing scheme was small potatoes compared to the expanded Technimark’s Longford site. It will include their first European innovation centre, incorporating office space for designers and engineers as well as a production lab for prototype manufacturing.

“Here is the engine that drives the economy of the wider region,” An Taoiseach said at the opening of the facility.
