Jury trial dropped as Longford man pleads guilty to serious assault

A man charged with causing serious harm to another man has had his trial dropped after he chose to plead guilty at this afternoon's sitting of Longford Circuit Court.

Derek Doherty (52), Vicarstown, Ballymahon, Co Longford, was due to stand trial tomorrow but pleaded guilty today just before a jury was due to be impanelled.

He was arraigned before Judge Francis Comerford this afternoon on one count of intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to another and pleaded guilty to that charge.

The alleged offence occurred on June 3, 2018, at a Colehill address and left the victim with serious, lasting injuries.

Mr Doherty has been remanded on continuing bail to May 9, 2022, when he will reappear for hearing and sentencing before Judge Comerford at Longford Circuit Court.
