Niamh Grier, a Form 4 student from Granard, who attends Wilson’s Hospital School, was the joint winner of the Regional Final of the Soroptimists public speaking competition on January 22, hosted by the Athlone branch.
Niamh won her local round in November and faced opposition in this regional round from local winners in counties Dublin, Louth, Meath and Westmeath.
Cnoc Mhuire Granard crowned the North Leinster Senior ‘B’ champions
Cnoc Mhuire Granard claimed the North Leinster Senior ‘B’ football championship title with a thrilling three point victory over Dunshaughlin Community College in the final at the Meath GAA Centre of Excellence in Dunganny on Monday evening.
Speaking on ‘Breaking the Stereotype’ and the heroism of wartime nurse Edith Cavell, Niamh’s entry was selected by judges in what was a very tight competition.
Niamh also performed well in the ‘Impromptu’ section in this round – where she had just two minutes to prepare followed by two minutes to deliver a speech on an unforeseen prompt word: ‘Fashion’.
Niamh is now looking forward to the National Final, which is scheduled for February 19 in the D Hotel, Drogheda. We wish her well!
