Michael O’Dowd, RENUA Ireland candidate for the North constituency, has condemned the murder of the 29-year old journalist Lyra McKee in Derry, describing her loss as 'appalling and tragic'.
Mr O’Dowd said, “This senseless snuffing out of a bright young life is appalling and tragic.
“It is an attack on free speech and democracy by cowards hiding behind balaclavas.”
The RENUA candidate says the political and policing world must ensure tragedies such as this do not reoccur.
“This is a past we have too much experience of and which we do not wish to return. Politics as well as policing must ensure we do not return.
“In this regard words are not enough. As a Border representative I say now that actions are needed.”
He says Sinn Féin and the DUP must now face up to their responsibilities.
He remarked, “Their failure to govern and abandonment of the responsible politics of the Good Friday Agreement has created a vacuum that has allowed evil to flourish.
“It is time Arlene Foster, Michelle O’Neil and Mary Lou McDonald got behind their desks and did the job others elected them to do.”
