Gardaí have revealed they are keeping an "open mind" into an arson attack in Longford town last night which resulted in a van being completely gutted out.

Minor fire damage was also caused to a house close to where the red Ford Transit was parked up in the Lana Aoibhinn area shortly after 1am when the blaze reportedly broke out.

Gardaí have so far declined to comment on the precise nature of the incident, preferring instead to state that a number of lines of inquiry are being followed.

The Leader, however, understands senior detectives believe the incident is linked to two recent incidents at a retail car park, just off the main Killashee Road.

The first of those which occurred two weeks ago, resulted in a man sustaining suspected stab wounds to his head and arm while on Monday a car window was smashed in at around 2pm.

Gardaí, in the interim, are appealing for witnesses to contact them over last night's episode to contact them at Longford Garda Station at (043) 3350570.
