A man is in garda custody this evening after a high speed chase across Co Longford earlier today.

He was arrested by gardai after officers from Longford Garda Station pursued a van which was believed to have been stolen sometime earlier.

As gardai gave chase, the van attempted to weave through oncoming traffic at high speed, hitting several cars in the process.

Due to the speed and dangerous nature of the driving involved, patrol cars which had been attempting to keep pace with the van, were ordered to pull back for their own safery.

It's understood the driver made off, heading out of town in the direction of Edgeworthstown where gardai later spotted the suspect vehicle at a filling station.

The Leader further understands that during the course of attempts by gardai to arrest the male suspect, the driver allegedly attempted to drive off by reversing the vehicle while a garda desperately tried to cling onto the vehicle.

During the course of that exchange, a number of cars were damaged as the man attempted to drive off before gardai eventually managed to subdue the driver and effect his arrest.

He is currently being detained at Longford Garda Station over the incident.
