Gardaí are probing a break-in at a fast food outlet on Longford town's Ballymahon Street at the weekend

Gardaí are on the hunt for a gang of burglars who smashed their way into a well known local fast food outlet at the weekend.

Two males approached the Ballymahon Street premises in Longford town shortly after 4am on Saturday morning (February 9) where at least one of the males attempted to gain entry by launching a series of kicks at its front door.

Seconds later, the pair are understood to have succeeded in their efforts before efforts were made to gain access to the store's till.

During those attempts, an alarm was activated, forcing both men to flee the scene.

It's believed gardaí are focusing much of their inquiries on CCTV footage taken from close to the scene as well as Skoda Octavia car which is being linked to the incident.

In a separate and unrelated incident, detectives are also looking for clues into a break in at a mobile phone shop on Longford's Market Square on Sunday morning.

This time, a sole suspect lashed out at the front door of the premises at around 11:30am.

After securing entry a short time later, the thief snatched a mobile phone from inside before attempting to escape on foot.

It's understood that as the suspect was chased from the scene, the stolen property was inadvertently dropped to to the floor.

Gardaí remain anxious to talk to anyone who may have witnessed either incident to contact them at Longford Garda Station.

Equally, investigators are keen to solve a suspected hit and run incident close to the Red Cow roundabout on the outskirts of Longford town last Friday evening.

It's believed a female motorist, who was at the wheel of her Mercedes car, was in the process of exiting the roundabout by taking the Drumlish exit when she was struck by a car and trailer.

Its driver momentarily stopped but took off seconds later in the direction of Drumlish.

Anyone with information in connection to this incident or the aforementioned two incidents, is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3350570.
