Longford town's Market Square is set for a major facelift after €1m in State aid was set aside by the Government
Plans to roll out a major regeneration drive across County Longford have been given a €1m cash injection.
Fine Gael councillor and Longford general election candidate Micheal Carrigy said the seven figure sum would go towards underpinning urban regeneration and development projects across Longford.
It's expected the bulk of the monies will go towards enhancement works in the Grafton Court and Shopping Centre area, St Mel's Road and Market Square.
“I am delighted that Longford has been announced among the first funding allocations under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund," said Cllr Carrigy.
“This fund will run until 2027, with a second call for proposals in 2019, so it is important to stress that there will be further opportunity to re-apply for future funding calls.
“Project Ireland 2040 demonstrates a new approach to planning and development in Ireland, recognising that we cannot continue with a ‘business as usual’ approach."
Independent Cllr Gerry Warnock took to his own Facebook page to reveal he had fielded a call from OPW Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran last night to inform him of the news.
"This vital money will allow us to commence work on project elements such as the Market Square; the Tesco Carpark and Grafton Court Regeneration as well as other street scape enhancement in early 2019," he said
"When coupled with last week's €500k towards the Canal Project, this gives us a yield of €1.5m for Longford Town Regeneration Projects in less than a week... with more to follow in 2019.
"Fantastic work by Longford County Council's Executive and Regeneration Team."
