Fears "someone will drown" in south Longford culvert

Cllr Mick Cahill (FF) fears someone will drown in culvert at Abbeyshrule.

A local councillor told this week’s meeting of Ballymahon Municipal District that he fears “someone will drown” if remedial works are not carried out on a culvert in south Longford.

Cllr Mick Cahill (FF) brought forward the matter through his notice of motion, when he called on Longford County Council to carry out the necessary works on the culvert which is located at the T-Junction in Cloughan, Abbeyshrule, “in the interest of road safety”.

“This is a very urgent matter,” Cllr Cahill (FF) told those gathered.

“Works need to be carried out soon because I do not want someone coming and telling me that a person has drowned there.”

Area engineer, Alan Slattery said that a cost for works on the culvert had been estimated at between €15,000 and €20,000.

“I am hopeful that this will be done when work begins on the bridge there later this year,” the area engineer concluded.
