UPDATE: 24-year-old arrested  in relation to fatal stabbing in Longford town

Gardaí have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with their investigation into a fatal stabbing in Longford town earlier today.

The man was arrested in the Longford area this afternoon and is currently detained at Longford Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A man in his 30s died after he received serious wounds to his chest in the incident, which occurred in the Great Water Street area of Longford town at approximately 11.50am.

He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, but died a short time later.

Part of the street at Rue Noyal Chatillon has been cordoned off for most of the day.

Gardaí are now appealing for anyone who may have been in the Great Water Street or Rue Noyal Chatillon areas, or in the vicinity of Longford Shopping Centre between 11.30am and 12 noon yesterday to contact Longford Gardaí on 043-3350570, the Garda Confidential Line on  1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
