A county Derry man who was being brought in custody from Mountjoy prison to appear on a number of charges at Ballymote District Court in Co Sligo yesterday made a quick escape in Longford at around 11am.
Glen Smith was accompanied by prison officers and when short-taken near Longford it was decided to stop at Longford Garda Station to allow him to go to the toilet. The prisoner was on crutches and on leaving the station for the prison-officers' vehicle he threw the crutches and ran away.
