Two men had to be hospitalised following separate assaults which took place in Longford town at the weekend.
Gardai say they are treating both incidents extremely seriously and are hoping to make progress with their investigations over the coming days.
The first incident occurred in the vicinity of the Longford Shopping Centre carpark and opposite Longford's County Library offices on Saturday evening.
A 17-year-old youth who had been in the area at the time sustained what have been described as 'bodily' injuries after being attacked with an unidentified implement sometime between 8:45pm and 9pm.
He was later taken to Mullingar's Midland Regional Hospital for treatment before being discharged the following day.
Hours later, gardai were called to a separate incident, this time in the Palace Crescent area of town.
It was here that a 24-year-old man sustained a head injury which also required hospital treatment.
Gardai believe that the incident occurred between the course of 1am and 1:30am on Sunday morning.
A Garda spokesperson said investigations into both incidents were now underway.
Senior officers are also hoping CCTV footage will throw up vital clues in their ongoing inquiries.
Similarly, they are also anxious to speak to anyone who may have witnessed either incident to make contact with Longford Garda Station at (043) 3350570.
