The new Chief Executive Officer of Longford Co Council, Paddy Mahon was welcomed to a meeting of the Granard Municipal District last week.
Mr Mahon, a former director of services with Mayo County Council, was ratified by Longford councillors in May.
During last week’s meeting, Granard Municipal District Cathaoirleach, Cllr Micheál Carrigy (FG) said Mr Mahon was very welcome “to the rebel heart of Longford”.
He added, “There is huge history in this area and as you know the connection to Michael Collins through Kitty Kiernan is well documented.”
Mr Mahon then informed the members gathered that he was delighted to be in Granard, a part of the country that he had heard “wonderful things about”.
“I am very aware too,” he smiled, “of the great sense of history here in north Longford; but the crux of this meeting is managing the affairs of the local area and that is what we are here to do.”
The local CEO went on to say that as far as he was concerned, municipal districts served a very important function by promoting their areas.
“I’m looking forward to working with you all at council level and indeed engaging with you all with regard to any issues or improvements that need to be addressed.”
Meanwhile, Cllr Carrigy added, “We work together as a group here in this municipal district; we are a group of six whose main aim is to improve this area.”
