Longford District Court: 'Do your work or do time'

A man who used threatening and abusive behaviour during an incident at Longford Courthouse last month was last week handed a community service order.

John Robertson (25), with an address at Moatfarrell, Edgeworthstown, Longford was convicted of the offence at Longford Circuit Court on February 9, 2016.

Solicitor for Mr Robertson, Fiona Baxter said the case had been pencilled in for last week’s District Court sitting to allow for a Probation Services report to see if her client was suitable for community service.

After reading through the report which was handed into court, Judge Hughes said Mr Robertson was facing 100 hours of community service.

However, he warned him that if he failed to meet the conditions imposed by the court, he would be punished with a custodial sentence.

“You (Mr Robertson) have been found suitable,” said Judge Hughes.

“You have no excuse to not turn up for work and carry it out and the matter won’t be back here.

“But if you fail to turn up, the matter will be brought back here (court) and you will do a month.”
