Catherine Matthews is Longford spelling winner

Twelve year old Catherine Matthews from St Columba’s National School, Mullinalaghta was recently crowned winner of the county Longford Eason Spelling Bee event.

Catherine fended off stiff competition from a number of other spelling enthusiasts and will now progress to the Provincial Spelling Bee. She is a keen reader and her favourite authors are Jacqueline Wilson and David Walliams.

The nationwide competition is part of an overall Eason literacy and reading initiative that aims to inspire children to develop a greater appreciation of words in a fun and educational way, and to encourage them to perfect their spelling and pronunciation skills.
