Longford is poised to benefit to the tune of almost €20 million after Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien announced over €1.5 billion in exchequer funding for national, regional and local roads in 2026.

There is €6m for the long awaited N4 Longford to Mullingar upgrade project and this will enable the project team to move to statutory and appraisal stages, with construction works commencing by 2030.

There is €13,633,825 allocated for Longford Roads and this figure can be broken down into Regional & Local Roads: €10,511,252 and National Roads: €3,122,573.

Minister O'Brien's announcement also included an allocation of €90m for the completion of the upgrade of the N5 Ballaghaderreen-Scramoge.

Minister O’Brien said, "Advancing the new national road projects in the current National Development Plan  and the Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport is a priority for this government, along with the protection and renewal of the existing national, regional and local road network. Government is committed to assisting affected local authorities with financial support to assist with the aftermath of Storm Chandra. My Department is liaising with affected counties, who are continuing to compile and assess damage on the ground to enable proper estimation of the total damage caused and the estimated cost of remediation."

Deputy Micheál Carrigy said, “I am delighted to see that €13,633,825 funding has been allocated to Longford County Council for essential national road repair works at designated areas and roads across Longford."

The Chairperson of the Fine Gael parliamentary party continued, "The continued safety for all road users is a key priority for Fine Gael in government and key to that is the protection and regeneration of our existing national road network.”

Deputy Carrigy added, "The allocation for protection and renewal of the existing national road network will fund a range of activities including road safety improvements, pavement renewal, maintenance of bridges and structures, and measures to ensure the network can withstand the increased number of severe weather events."

Hailing it as 'one of the best days for some time for roads in county Longford', Senator Joe Flaherty said Longford will see 'a total allocation of almost €20m when we factor in the long awaited N4 funding'.

The Fianna Fáil representative said €13.6m will aid Longford County Council to maintain and upgrade its extensive network of regional and national roads. There's €10.5m for the regional roads and then €3.1m for the network of national roads in the county.

Senator Flaherty highlighted that there are a number of very specific and important capital projects for the national routes but that the standout item is the €1.7m funding for the Lanesboro / N63 road to Gowlan. "This money will transform the entrance to the county town from this side and is much needed."
