Artists and community groups attend Longford Lights seminar

More than 60 local, national and international artists joined community representatives at the recent Longford Lights Seminar, marking a key milestone in preparations for the festival’s return to Longford Town from Thursday to Sunday, February 19 - 22.

Funded by Longford County Council, Creative Ireland, and the Arts Council of Ireland, Longford Lights is Ireland’s largest community-based arts festival, attracting over 10,000 visitors annually. This year promises an even more ambitious programme.

Hosted at Backstage Theatre, the festival’s partner venue, the seminar featured artists from Finland, Poland, Italy and across Ireland. Local groups included Longford ICA Federation, Longford Indian Group, TY students, Longford Scouts, and participating schools.

Attendees met the artistic team led by Artistic Director Caroline Conway, previewed works for the festival, and took part in a lantern-making workshop.

Following the seminar, artists, community groups and schools will collaborate on large-scale installations using light, projections and sound. These works will form the heart of the festival’s immersive environments.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, "Longford Lights 2026 is shaping up to be spectacular. The creativity and collaboration on display are inspiring. Arts Officer and Festival Producer Shane Crossan said, "Longford Lights has grown into Ireland’s biggest community-based arts festival. This year we’re raising the bar with more artists, more installations and deeper community engagement. It’s going to be unforgettable."

Assistant Artistic Director Tommy Casby noted that it was an ideal opportunity for people to connect, share ideas and build the creative partnerships that make Longford Lights so distinctive.

Longford Lights 2026 runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, Thursday, 19 to Sunday, 22 February. Large crowds are expected, so book early at www.longfordlights.ie
