Longford County Council issued a road safety alert following the status yellow ice warning
Longford County Council have issued Longford road users with a Road Safety Alert for the duration of the Met Éireann status yellow ice warning in place for the county until 11am this morning, Monday January 5.
With Met Éireann warning of severe frost, icy stretches, and black ice, travel conditions are expected to be treacherous this morning.
The council have cautioned drivers to take it slow and to allow extra space between vehicles as icy roads will mean a reduced grip and longer stopping distances.
Road users have been warned to be especially cautious of hail, "the greatest winter hazard" as it will remain on the road, even if salted.
Lastly, motorists are being advised to ensure their vehicle windows and lights are clear before driving, and to check tyre pressure before taking to the road as the cold weather can lower it.
