Homeowners can receive a grant if their property has remained vacant for at least two years and was built prior to 2007

The Vacant Homes schemes have a number of options available

Almost €3 million has been paid in Vacant Property Refurbishment grants in Longford this year alone, a recent meeting of Longford County Council has heard.

Exactly €2,935,664 was paid out under the scheme, which is designed to help homeowners bring vacant and derelict properties back into residential use. In a 2025 progress report presented by council Chief Executive, Paddy Mahon, the chamber heard there had been 247 applications for the grant this year.

Under the scheme, homeowners can receive a €50,000 grant if their property has remained vacant for at least two years and was built prior to 2007.

A separate category is also in place for derelict properties whereby applicants can receive €70,000 if the property is professionally deemed “structurally unsound or significantly dilapidated.”
