Longford Gardaí nab a motorist double parked in Longford town yesterday
Motorists are being reminded not to park illegally in Longford Town or they will face being fined on the spot.
Two Gardaí, during a patrol of Main Street in Longford Town yesterday, came across a motorist double parked outside EuroGiant. The driver's details were immediately recorded and a fine will now be sent out.
The issue with illegal parking in Longford town was described in a county council meeting last week as having reached a "chronic" stage with councillors remarking on the frequency at which motorists either double park, or park in a reserved space such as a disabled bay, a loading bay, or a taxi rank, before putting on their hazard lights and abandoning the car to run into a nearby shop or takeaway.
The now-daily occurrences of illegal parking has prompted calls from councillors for tougher measures and steeper fines such as a €500 if caught parked in a disabled bay, or €1,000, if it's a second offence.
Longford Gardaí have asked that road users to respect reserved spaces in the town otherwise they will face a fine this Christmas.
