Longford Council: Ballymahon pedestrian crossing lights need to be upgraded

Pat O'Toole

Ballymahon Councillor Pat O'Toole has called for the urgent trimming of trees on the Moigh Road

Lighting levels at a pedestrian crossing in Ballymahon are under review following a notice of motion tabled by Councillor Pat O'Toole at a recent Ballymahon Municipal District meeting.
Cllr O'Toole called on Longford County Council to upgrade the lighting at the pedestrian crossing at St Matthew’s Church Ballymahon similar to those at pedestrian crossing at St Matthew’s Primary School.

In his reply Con Diffley, of the local authority's Road Design department said: “Longford County Council will review lighting levels at the pedestrian crossing at St Matthew's Church and will carry out any upgrade works necessary on foot of that review.”

Cllr O'Toole also said the inclusion of South Longford roads project in a Department of Transport €9.5M spend on improvement and restoration work on Longford's road for 2024 is very welcome.

The Ballymahon Municipal District Councillor said the allocation of €200,000 under the Specific Improvement Grant for the Mullingar Abbeyshrule Road junction at Forgney will address a significant issue.

Cllr O'Toole, along with Deputy Joe Flaherty, raised the need to improve sight lines at the busy junction with the Department of Transport and the local authority.
“Apart from improving the sight lines at the junction it's envisaged that additional works will be required to enhance the regional road all the way to Forgney Church and Cemetery a road with a huge volume of traffic particularly with its proximity to Center Parcs Longford Forest and undoubtedly a much greater funding allocation will be required to achieve that goal,” Cllr O'Toole concluded.
