Amalgamation of Longford’s St Mel’s College and Meán Scoil Mhuire moves a step closer
The possible amalgamation of two Longford town secondary schools, St Mel’s College and Meán Scoil Mhuire, has moved a step closer.
The news comes after the Patrons of the schools, Most Rev Paul Connell Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois (St Mel’s College) and Gerry McGuill Chief Executive CEIST (Meán Scoil Mhuire) published a joint statement following the recent consultation on the future of Catholic Secondary education in Longford town.
Having considered the report and submissions it was outlined that “the Patrons are now exploring all options including, but not confined to, the possibility of locating Meán Scoil Mhuire on the St Mel’s College site to facilitate a new amalgamated Catholic Co-educational school.”
The statement adds, “The Patrons will commence an engagement with the Department of Education Building Unit in Tullamore with the aim of enhancing the educational facilities available for all students in Longford town and also ensuring the availability into the future of a strong and vibrant Catholic Post Primary option in Longford town for parents who wish to avail of it.”
The consultation process, guided by independent facilitator Mr Frank Smith, commenced in February of 2023 and was undertaken with the school communities of Meán Scoil Mhuire and St Mel's College and the wider community of Primary Schools in the Longford area.
The report was shared with the Board of Managements of both schools in mid-December, following which, more time was given to both schools to make further submissions to the Patrons.
