Longford TD confirms funding for critical N4 upgrade is imminent
Funding of in the region of €2 million to take the long awaited N4 upgrade to the next stage will be included in this year’s TII roads announcement.
The Mullingar to Rooskey N4 upgrade is a critical piece of infrastructure and was paused approximately 17 months ago.
Confirming the news, Longford / Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty, explained, “The project was paused at a crucial stage but I have been assured that the necessary funding to now take the project to the next stage will be announced in the coming weeks.”
Deputy Flaherty said he was all too aware that this is a major project for county Longford and he thanked Minister Jack Chambers from the Dept of Transport who recently met elected members and officials from Longford County Council on the issue.
“The government was repeatedly reminded of the significance of this road upgrade for Longford and I am pleased that it is now one of a number of road projects that will proceed to the next stage this year.”
Deputy Flaherty concluded, “In the region of €2m in funding will be announced and this will take the project to the route design stage. It's critical for the long term future of the project.”
Fine Gael Senator Micheal Carrigy also welcomed the development that the N4 Mullingar to Longford (Rooskey) ‘is back in for consideration with the TII’.
Senator Carrigy commented, “I would hope that the project will progress to design and environmental phase by year end. I have raised this on numerous occasions over the years and at a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport & Communications it was agreed that this project was well worth progressing and I’m happy that the N4 is back on the agenda.”
