EirGrid granted permission for upgrade of Longford overhead power lines

Longford County Council planners have granted permission to EirGrid plc to undertake significant work on overhead lines in the Lanesboro area.

The proposed development will consist of the replacement (“restringing”) of the existing overhead line circuit conductor wires with a new higher capacity conductor including installation of a new fibre communication connection.

The work will see the retention, refurbishment and replacement of the steel member and foundation strengthening of the one retained end mast EM1, including the replacement of hardware and fittings, replacement of vibration dampers, and replacement of insulators at EM1.

To accommodate the work cutting of timber and vegetation and all associated works within the existing Lanesboro 110kV substation to accommodate the uprated 110kV OHL including uprating of the Sliabh Bawn bay in Lanesboro 110kV substation and alterations to existing hardware.

The permission covers associated and ancillary site development works required for the purpose of the uprate of the existing circuit, including construction compounds, silt traps, silt fences, stone tracks, ground protection mats, infrastructure crossing support systems and temporary watercourse crossings.

The site address is Lanesboro Town and Aghamore Townland, County Longford. The local authority were cast with making the decision when it was determined that the work was not considered strategic infrastructure.

Following consideration of issues raised during the consultation An Bord Pleanála decided the development does not come within the scope of section 182A of the Planning and Development Act 2000.

An Bord Pleanála said “This means that the application for planning consent for the proposed development should be made to the local planning authority”.

Longford County Council planners granted permission subject to 12 conditions.
