Longford's Meán Scoil Mhuire hosted their Leaving Certificate Excellence Awards on December 22, 2023 . The awards ceremony recognised the outstanding academic achievement of seventeen students who achieved 600 and 625 points in the Leaving Certificate Exams or a Distinction of Higher Merit in the Leaving Certificate Applied Exam between 2020 and 2023.

Ms Lyons, school principal, opened the ceremony by welcoming the returning students and outlining the many trials and tribulations that they overcame in order to achieve these remarkable results. She recalled online classes, accredited grades, calculated grades, and the immense uncertainty that embodied the period from 2020 to 2023. READ MORE BELOW PHOTO

Ms Lyons also acknowledged the milestones that students did not get to experience and expressed a hope that the ceremony in some small part might address those missed milestones.

Each former student was then presented with their awards by their Year Heads, Mr Mac Aodha, Year Head to the Class of 2020, Madame Bunaz and Mr Healy, Year Heads to the Class of 2021, Ms Keogh, Year Head to the Class of 2022 and Ms Mc Enroe, Year Head to the Class of 2023.

Unfortunately, not all students could make the event due to prior commitments and these students were acknowledged throughout the ceremony also.

We wish each and every student the very best as they continue with their third level studies. It was an honour and a privilege to welcome our former students back to Meán Scoil Mhuire and to hear of their continued academic success.

Christmas Around the World
Our wonderful First Year students were busy the week of December 18 teaching one another all about the different Christmas traditions they engage in at Christmas time. Students also taught one another how to say ‘Merry Christmas’ in the various different languages that are spoken within the group. This was an amazing learning opportunity for all. Well done girls!! You have all made Ms Hughes, Ms Graham and Ms Healy very proud!

Christmas Talent Show
There was great anticipation ahead of our annual Christmas Talent Show on December 21st 2023, and once again the acts did not disappoint. From singing to dancing, to drama to Gangsta grannies, to dancing teachers the atmosphere was at fever-pitch! Ms White and her team organised two shows, one for Junior Students and one for Senior students and the calibre of student talent on display was truly immense. Thank you to everyone who participated in the event, to Ms White for all her hard work and to the audience for their support!

Christmas Carol Service
The Annual Christmas Carol Service was held in Saint Mel’s Cathedral on December 20, 2023. The service allows the entire school community to come together and acknowledge the miracle of Christmas. Students spoke about their own Christmas traditions and outlined how Christmas is celebrated in Poland, Slovakia, Spain and numerous other countries.

The choir performed moving carols including Carol of the Bells and students from all year groups participated in readings and prayers. As has become an annual tradition, Transition Year students, mentored by Deborah, signed to “Snow is Falling”. The service was a beautiful, moving and inspiring way to begin the Christmas period and we would like to thank Ms White, Ms Macko and all teachers and students who participated in and contributed to this wonderful occasion.

Subject Options Fair
Tuesday, December 19 marked the annual Subject Options Fair. This event allow Third and Transition Year students to meet and talk to Senior Students and learn about the various optional subjects available at Senior Cycle, prior to completing their subject option choice. Thank you to all students who participated in the event.

Happy New Year
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all members of our school community a wonderful New Year. We wish you good health, happiness and prosperity for 2024. We would like to thank all those who work so hard every year to support our work and we look forward to a year of adventure ahead. Athbhliain Faoi Mhaise Daoibh!
