Arrest made in connection with serious assault in Co Westmeath

An arrested has been made in connection with a serious assault in Co Westmeath on Sunday.

The assault took place outside a premises on Patrick Street in Mullingar at around 1.40am.

A man aged in his mid 50s was removed from the scene by emergency services to Regional Hospital Mullingar.

He was transferred to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be critical.

A man aged in his 50s was arrested on Monday afternoon and is being detained at a Garda Station in the midlands under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

An investigation is ongoing and gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
