It is with regret that we record the death of Mr James Murphy, Drumalt Court, Main Street, Arva which occurred at Beechtree Nursing Home, Murragh, Oldtown, Co Dublin on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.

Jim, as he was popularly known was born in Arva on 22 February 1933, eldest son of Lily and John.

Tragically, Jim’s father passed away when Jim was a boy and he was taken out of school to take over the work of his father as a lamp lighter and meter reader in the town. Jim also had a second job working behind the counter at Keith’s.

As a teenager he moved to Liverpool for work and while there he met and later married the love of his life Sheila. They moved a number of times due to work but eventually settled in Wigan.

Jim inherited his great love of cars from his own father and his children have lovely memories of traveling to various race car circuits and enjoying the cars whiz past.

Jim’s job as a coach driver took him throughout Europe, his favourite destination being the Austrian Alps. His son Graham often went with him and remembers Jim giving very descriptive tours and looking after his passengers so very well.

When Graham, Alison and Matthew later went to Achill, where Jim lived after his wife Sheila passed away, his commentary along the Wild Atlantic Way was second to none.

While taking his family to see Arva the call of home became too strong and Jim announced he was moving home and spent his last years in Arva where he rekindled old friendships and made many new one’s.

Earlier in 2023 he celebrated his 90th birthday and had a hugely enjoyable time with his family and friends.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, his wife Sheila and his brother Sean and is survived by his son Graham (Alison), daughter Karen (Dave), grandchildren Ian (Alex), Michelle (Matt) and Matthew, great-grandchildren KC and Ellie, nephews, nieces, all his extended family and many friends, to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.

Jim’s Funeral Service was held in Lakelands Crematorium, Dublin Road, Cavan on Monday, December 18, followed by cremation.
