Man who weighed prime beef cuts as bananas appears before Longford court

A man stole prime beef cuts from a local supermarket by weighing them as bananas at the self-service till on two occasions.

Before the recent sitting of Longford District Court was Stephen Brennan (31), of Lisryan, Strokestown, Co Roscommon who was charged with theft of a fillet of beef and a round roast of beef at Davis SuperValu, Killashee Road, Longford on November 6 and 12 last.

Garda Sergeant Mark Mahon said the defendant entered the store on two occasions. On the first occasion he got a round roast of beef, valued at €10.49. On the second occasion he went for fillet of beef, at a cost of €13.99.

Sgt Mahon said on both occasions “he scanned in bananas, rather than beef”.

Defence solicitor Brid Mimnagh said her client had been in foster care most of his life.

He effectively has been homeless recently and has been moving around between houses and “sofa-surfing”.

“He didn’t have the money to pay for the nice cuts of beef,” she said. He is now living at an address at Roscommon.

The case was adjourned to May 7, 2024.
