Longford man accused of taser gun possession
A case against a man who allegedly was in possession of a taser gun when he was stopped by gardaí, has been adjourned to next year.
Kevin Stokes Jnr (30), Lisnanagh, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford appeared before the recent sitting of Longford District Court where he was charged with possession of a firearm - a stun gun - and assault in Edgeworthstown on April 24, 2020.
Sergeant James Rowan outlined to the court that the defendant had been stopped by gardaí and had discarded a cylindrical object, which turned out to be a taser gun.
While the defendant was being arrested, some members of his family were in the vicinity and were threatening to gardaí, he told the court.
The defendant punched a garda in the side of the face, and a later medical report noted there had been ringing in his ears since the incident.
The item had since been examined by the ballistics unit and was confirmed to be a taser/stun gun.
Judge Bernadette Owens said she would be looking for a victim impact statement before the next court appearance. Sgt Rowan said he could canvass it.
Defence solicitor Fiona Baxter said they would also be looking for a probation report. The defendant is currently in custody, serving a sentence of 40 months in Castlerea Prison for an unrelated matter.
The case was adjourned to February 6, 2024.
