A Slovakian national who indicated he wishes to return home after he completes a prison term was handed a one month custodial sentence at Longford District Court.

Tomas Kurina (29) of 6 Chapel Lane Apartments Edgeworthstown was before the court on two charges.

The defendant was charged with entering Carrickboy Farms, Ballyglass, Edgeworthstown and stealing a Fujitsu laptop on July 16, 2023 and of stealing property (groceries to the value of €84.92) from Supervalu, Longford on March 27, 2023.

The Slovak national entered a plea of guilty to the charges before the court. Sergeant Mark Mahon said the defendant travelled in a car to the Edgeworthstown farm and entered offices at the premises where he took the laptop valued at €600.

After a Garda investigation officers searched the defendant's home where they recovered the stolen computer. Mr Kurina made a full admission. The court was told he has no previous convictions, however last week he received a one month custodial sentence in Cavan District Court.

Solicitor Brid Mimnagh told the judge her client has been living in Ireland for the last year and a half. Ms Mimnagh said the defendant had a job, but lost it.

Finding himself without income he stole the groceries in March and the laptop in July.

The legal representative said that at the Cavan court hearing Mr Kurina indicated he would like to return home after he has served his sentence.

Judge Bernadette Owens registered a conviction and imposed a sentence of one month for the theft of the computer and took the groceries theft into consideration. The judge directed that it be served concurrent with the sentence already in place. Legal aid was granted.
