A man has been remanded in custody with consent to bail in the wake of a garda search operation in south Longford on Monday that resulted in the discovery of a cache of drugs.

Bart Scally (43) Cleraun, Newtowncashel, Co Longford, appeared at a sitting of Longford District Court yesterday evening following a planned garda operation on Monday.

The Longford man was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis for sale and supply.

During a contested bail hearing before Judge Bernadette Owens, Mr Scally told of how he had fallen foul of a €400 drugs debt and was addicted to smoking cannabis.

Sgt Mark Mahon, for the State, objected to bail on a number of grounds.

Defence solicitor Bríd Mimnagh applied for bail, stating that Mr Scally was someone who would adhere to any conditions the court chose to hand down.

Following a ten minute adjournment, Judge Owens returned to the bench and remanded Mr Scally in custody with consent to bail subject to a number of conditions.

Among them included conditions that Mr Scally provide an independent €3,000 surety, €1,500 of which is to be cash with the identity of that surety to be approved by the court.

Judge Owens also ordered Mr Scally to abide by a 10pm to 6am curfew, to sign on at Longford garda station three times a week, to reside at his home address and to provide gardaí with 48 hours notice in the event on an application for an alternative residing address is to be made.

He was remanded in custody with consent to bail to appear by video link at a sitting of Longford District Court next Monday.
