Two women and a man are to stand trial accused of assaulting another man in the middle of Longford town in broad daylight.

Julie Stokes (52) and Leveda Stokes (23), both of 45 MacEoin Park, Longford were served with a book of evidence at last week's sitting of Longford District Court in connection to an incident on April 28, 2022.

They are both accused of assaulting Francis Gavin at Ballymahon Street and of committing violent disorder.

Julie Stokes also stands charged with allegedly possessing a knife during the course of the alleged incident.

Their co-accused Billy Stokes (32) of 26 The Hollows, Farnagh Hill, Longford was also served with a book of evidence.

Like Julie and Leveda Stokes, he was charged with a section 3 assault on Mr Gavin and of committing violent disorder.

All three were given an alibi warning by presiding Judge Bernadette Owens, meaning they have 14 days to notify the State solicitor's office if they wish to rely on an alibi during the course of their trial.

Sgt Mark Mahon, for the State, said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had consented for the trio to be sent forward for trial and requested that each of the accused appear before a sitting of Longford Circuit Criminal Court last Tuesday afternoon.
