A man in his 20s has appeared in court this evening charged in connection to an incident in north Longford at the weekend which resulted in the alleged discharge of a firearm.

The man was brought before a sitting of Longford District Court after almost two full days of questioning at Longford garda station.

The accused was arrested on Saturday evening, barely 24 hours after at least one gunshot was allegedly fired at a car which was parked outside Aughnacliffe's Glenview Lounge at around 11pm on Friday night.

A second man, aged in his late teens, was also arrested with both men being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The latter was released from garda custody earlier today without charge ahead of a file being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
