Brendan King and Denis Hughes were level against Kevin Smith and Brian Mulvihill after four holes but they struggled from then on and the match ended on the 14th hole.
It was a similar situation for Eddie Connolly and John Masterson who were three down after nine against Declan Conlon and Shane Ward and the match ended by the 14th.
Dan Foley and Richie Moloney looked in trouble when they were 3 down after 6 against Donnacha Prendergast and Micheal Dunne and they had reduced this to one with 3 holes left. Dan Foley then stepped in and birdied 15 and 16 and they won on the 18th again.

Club 55
Knowing of Martin Shannon’s death on Wednesday 17th December, members were recalling on Thursday last, the long period that Martin and his family had suffered with health problems.
His positive association with Club 55 and the Golf Club had left his impression with members. We extend our sincerest sympathy to his wife Betty, and to their family of Audrey, David, Derek, Ian and Patrick.
A 9-hole golf competition was organised for the day, with the hope that members would have played before the predicted downfall of rain. Unfortunately nature ‘lost’ its control and some members had to abandon playing the last few holes, otherwise they would have experienced the downfall!
Liam Healion was the player to be “showered down” with golf skill on the day and to be the winner of Gerry Lynch’s sponsored prize. He recorded 18pts over eight holes, which was supported with exclusive pars on the 1st and 7th holes.
John Kavanagh was second as he recorded 16pts. Kieran O’Brien had to oust Liam Faughnan, Michael Mollaghan, and Brian Duffy to win the third position, as each recorded a score of 15pts. Maybe it was Kieran’s exclusive par on the 5th hole that helped his effort in some way!
For some reason there was no par recorded on the 2nd, 6th, and 9th holes. Thursday 8th January is the next date for Club 55 members golf group activity.
Many thanks to Padraic O’Brien and the staff of the Longford Leader for the inclusion of Golf notes in its newspaper each week.
