The Independent candidate said it felt like he had returned from the political 'wilderness'

A buoyant Kevin 'Boxer' Moran was hoisted up by his army of canvassers as he was deemed elected and exceeded the quota on count 14 at the TUS Athlone.

He received 195 votes in transfers from Sorca Clarke's surplus of over 563 votes to get a total of 10,450 votes, 135 over the quota of 10,315.

The now Deputy Moran was elected after losing his seat in 2020 before a jubilant return to politics in the local elections in June when he topped the poll in Westmeath.

He became the third TD to be elected in the Longford-Westmeath constituency with two seats left to fill and Robert Troy and Longford's Micheál Carrigy closing in on the seats.

Paul Hogan of Independent Ireland was eliminated on the last count and his 4,484 votes are now being distributed.
