Gerry Warnock is calling for the re-establishment of a fully empowered and resourced town council for towns with a population of over 10,000 people
Longford independent candidate in the General Election, Gerry Warnock, has described the abolition of Town Councils in 2014 as “an act of political vandalism”.
In his campaign for Dáil Éireann the former county council member said development within the county town has consequently diminished since the layer of local government was removed.
“Due to a diverse range of issues large urban settlements need that extra focus that they are simply not getting at County Council level,” Mr Warnock said, “Statutory powers available at Municipal District level are not robust enough to deal effectively with major issues due to a diminution of powers at that level.”

He says the re-establishment of a fully empowered and resourced town council for towns with a population of over 10,000 “could help turn this around due to the strategic focus that could be applied on a smaller and more defined area”.

Mr Warnock said the additional local authority would restore county towns as the economic driver for surrounding areas.
