In a repeat of the recent O’Beirne Cup Final, Ballymahon Vocational School gained revenge against Lanesboro Community College in the North Leinster Post-Primary Schools Senior ‘D’ Football Championship Round 1 game at Leo Casey Park on Wednesday last.
While the final score might suggest that Ballymahon VS had it all their own way, this was certainly not the case. For long periods of this entertaining encounter, the eventual winners played catch up and it wasn’t until the final quarter that they got on top.
Lanesboro CC got off to a flying start when straight from the throw-in Eoin Sorohan planted the ball in the back of the net and added another three points to their tally in establishing a commanding early advantage.
Ballymahon VS eventually registered their opening score when Martin McGoey converted a free midway through the first half and three further points followed from McGoey to close the gap. On the changeover a glorious move involving Andrew Dalton saw him deliver a perfect pass into the arms of Casey Weafer and he made no mistake to score a crucial goal.
In the 51st minute Ballymahon VS eventually got back on level terms when Enda Farrell landed a point and they then hit the front with a goal from Andrew Farrell. Lanesboro CC tried hard to salvage the situation but their hopes were dashed when they conceded another couple of goals in the closing stages of the game – both scored by Casey Weafer.
