Longford suffered a second defeat in the Fr. Manning Cup Tournament against a superior Sligo side at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Wednesday evening of last week.
And the latest setback means that the county U-16 footballers are out of contention for the title that was won last year under the guidance of the management team of Tony Devlin (Clonguish), John Coyle (Mostrim) and Finbar Meehan (Northern Gaels) who are back in charge for the current campaign.
There was little separating the sides in the first half with Sligo holding a slender 0-8 to 1-4 lead at the break with Cathal McCabe firing home a cracking goal in the 19th minute while the Longford points came from Jayson Matthews (2), Liam Barry and Robert Clarke.
Although Barry missed a clear-cut chance of a goal in the first half, Sligo were denied twice by the opposing keeper Dylan McGoey who produced fine point-blank saves from Nathan Rooney and Kyle Cawley to keep his net intact.
Rooney and Cawley, in the central attacking positions, inflicted most of the damage for the visitors in clocking up 1-9 between them.
Sligo pulled away in the second half in adding another 2-5 to their tally while Longford grabbed a consolation goal from a penalty converted by Cathal McCabe in the 51st minute.
