Killoe ladies complete the double

Killoe ladies completed the Senior League and Championship double when they defeated Clonguish in the Division 1 League Final at the Slashers grounds, Michael Fay Park, on Saturday evening last.

It was the second time these two sides met in a final this season and the outcome was the same; a Killoe win. They completely dominated the game and should have won by more but for some very wayward shooting. Clonguish grabbed a late consolation goal through Shannon Woods but the game had been over as a contest long before that.

Played in bitterly cold conditions this game certainly did nothing to warm up the small band of supporters in attendance. It was rather poor and at times scrappy encounter. Killoe were the better side but in Aoife Darcy Clonguish have an excellent player that has the ability to turn on the style. She covered so much of the field and was a real thorn in Killoe’s side.

It was Darcy who opened the scoring inside the opening minute; pointing a free. Killoe then broke down the field and Cora Kiernan laid the ball off to Anne Marie Bratten who got her sides first point.

Sabrina Hackett had a goal chance in the 6th minute but Clonguish keeper Amy Faughnan did well to deny the Killoe forward. Another Aoife Darcy free in the 8th minute put her side in front again but Killoe responded with a nice point from Lizzie Brady.

Clonguish netminder Faughnan thwarted Killoe again in the 17th minute; this time denying Edel Quinn a goal. Anna McDonnell put Killoe ahead in the 19th minute and it was a lead they didn’t relinquish.

Two unanswered points from Sabrina Hackett and Fiona Fox put Killoe ahead by three points at the break; 0-5 to 0-2. One minute in the second half Alison Kenny had a chance to extend the lead further but her effort came off the post. Two minutes later and Anne Marie Bratten stretched Killoe’s advantage to four points.

Another free from Aoife Darcy got Clonguish’s third point in the 34th minute but then Killoe just took control and showed why they are the best ladies team in the county. Another Anne Marie Bratten score restored their four point lead in the 35th minute.

Sabrina Hackett got her second point one minute later before Edel Quinn and Jacinta Brady got their names on the scoresheet. There was eight between the sides when Bratten fired over another point in the 48th minute.

Then Killoe substitute Rebecca Tully got her name on the scoresheet minutes after being introduced. After being out of the game for nearly 19 minutes, Clonguish replied with a point by Laura Healy – their first score from play in the 54th minute.

Killoe got their final point of the game in the 57th minute through Sabrina Hackett while Clonguish got a late consolation goal in the 59th minute when Shannon Woods shot from a tight angle eluded Killoe keeper Louise Clarke and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
