Lanesboro Community College lose out after extra-time

Seven points in front at one stage of the game thanks to first half goals from Patrick Feeney and Diarmuid Murtagh, the Lanesboro Community College U-16 footballers let the North Leinster Schools Junior ‘D’ title slip from their grasp in eventually losing out to Tullamore College after extra-time in a highly entertaining final played at the windswept St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds, Ballyleague on Tuesday of last week..

Talented full-forward Murtagh (who scored 1-7 in total) led the early charge and Lanesboro CC played particularly well in the first half in really putting it up to Tullamore College who appeared to be in trouble when trailing by 2-3 to 0-3 at the break. However, the visitors showed a lot of character to stage a great recovery and three goals in the second half ensured a most exciting finish as the sides finished all square, 2-8 to 3-5, at the end of normal time.

Thus extra-time was required to resolve the issue and despite the gallant efforts of the spirited Lanesboro CC outfit they only succeeded in adding another two points to their tally. Tullamore College held the upper hand in grabbing another couple of crucial goals and emerged victorious by the rather flattering margin of eight points in the end.
