Glenn Ryan disappointed with the result but still in a positive frame of mind

For the second week in a row Longford lamented losing a game they could and should have got something out. Following the unlucky defeat in Wexford the previous week, Longford lost out to neighbours Westmeath at Pearse Park on Sunday by two points. Manager Glenn Ryan was disappointed they didn’t come away with something from the game: “It was a game that we did enough to win. Performance wise we didn’t do too bad and similar to last week we came out the wrong side of the result. I thought we won most of the battles. We are able to compete at this level, that’s what we have shown. We need to show now that we can get results,” he told the Leader.

Longford had enough chances to win the game but kicked 12 wides to Westmeath’s 5 and also made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes which the Lake County duly punished. Ryan admitted Longford can’t afford to make those mistakes in Division 2: “That’s the difference at this level. You know if you make mistakes, you are going to be punished. Simple little things went amiss for us. Overall I would be happy with the level of performance. We are after coming out of those two games the better side but unfortunately we just didn’t get the results.”

Just like in Wexford, the two goals that Longford conceded proved to be the difference with Dessie Dolan’s 55th minute strike swinging the game in Westmeath’s favour: “There are things that you have to put up with and make sure they don’t happen again,” said the Longford boss. “We reacted positively to it; we still had a chance to get something out of the game towards the end. That says a lot for the fellas; not dropping their heads.”

Longford now have to wait until March 2nd for their next game; a tricky tie away to Armagh. Ryan would rather they had a game next Sunday and not a break: “I would prefer to be out again next Sunday. We don’t have much re-grouping to do. The performance is up there with where we expected but we just didn’t come out the right sides of the results. We realise we are competing at a higher level and we realise we can’t make some mistakes we made this week and last. There isn’t much we have to do to get to the right side of results.
