There was a strong Longford connection in the DCU squad who won the Electric Ireland All-Ireland Freshers 1 football competition with both Kenagh’s Keelin McGann and Clonguish’s Jack Duggan featuring in the very exciting win over UCC in the final played at the IT Carlow GAA grounds on Thursday evening.

McGann, who started for Longford in the recent draw against Louth in the National Football League, lined-out at right-half-forward on the DCU team and impressed in scoring a couple of points.

Second half substitute Duggan also figured prominently for Dublin City University with a goal and a point to his credit in a highly entertaining game.

Other members of the successful DCU squad were Sean O’Sullivan (Sean Connolly’s) and Bryan Masterson (Abbeylara) with Eoin McGuinness (Longford Slashers) part of the students management team.

DCU led by 2-5 to 1-5 at the break and scored three more goals in the third quarter to establish a firm grip on the game.
