While Longford crashed to a heavy defeat against a much superior Carlow side at C&D Devine Park, Mostrim on Sunday, they could still reach the Lidl Ladies Football National League Division 4 semi-finals should they succeed in winning their remaining games away to Kilkenny and Offaly.
Carlow . . . 4-13 Longford . . . 0-3
There was no stopping the unbeaten Carlow outfit who were winning their sixth consecutive match this season and it was all over as a contest at the break with the visitors building up a very commanding 3-6 to 0-2 lead.
Things went from bad to worse for Longford when they were reduced to 14 players following a harsh straight red card for midfielder Sian Gallagher at the start of the second half and another blow was suffered soon after when centre-half-forward Katie Crawford was forced to retire injured.
Rampant Carlow added 1-7 to their most emphatic tally on the changeover with the home county restricted to a solitary point.
The Longford scores were registered by Sian Gallagher and Aoife Darcy (2) and while this is a game they will want to forget in a hurry, a win is strongly expected to materialise against pointless Kilkenny on Sunday next.
