Flying high at the top of the Division 4 table with maximum points from four fixtures, Carlow will be coming to Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday in a confident frame of mind for the crunch clash against Longford, throw-in 2pm.
Excellent wins over Antrim (away), Wicklow (home), Tipperary (away) and Waterford (home) has put Joe Murphy’s well balanced outfit in a strong position to gain one of the two promotion places and that will almost certainly be guaranteed with another positive result.
Having said that, the previous clash between the counties ended in a victory for Longford in the group stage of the Tailteann Cup when it was least expected as Mike Solan’s side had already crashed out of the Tier 2 senior football championship.
Longford are improving after extending their unbeaten run in the current National League with the draw at home to Tipperary on Sunday last but will be disappointed after letting a third consecutive win slip from their grasp in a frantic finish.
Should they succeed in halting the Carlow gallop, promotion becomes possible for the boys in blue and gold but they are facing a tough task against the table toppers.
The unbeaten Longford senior hurlers are also in league action this weekend against Lancashire at the GAA Centre of Excellence in Abbottstown on Saturday (throw-in 1pm) and will be strongly fancied to register their fourth win in a row in the quest to qualify for the Division 4 final.
With their game away to Offaly last weekend postponed due to unplayable pitches, the Longford ladies resume their National League Division 4 campaign with home advantage against unbeaten Carlow at C&D Devine Park in Edgeworthstown, throw-in 2pm.
